What Winning a Wool Award Taught Me About Tradition, Legacy, and Leadership

Back in 2019, I was thrilled to be awarded the Innovation in Wool Award by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen—a moment that not only recognised my work with British wool but also marked the beginning of a journey I never could have imagined.

Fast forward to today, and I’m honoured to share that I’ve now been admitted to the Court of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen—the governing body of one of the oldest Livery Companies in the City of London. This recognition is incredibly meaningful, not just on a personal level, but also for the wider mission of championing wool innovation and sustainability in the UK.

Who are the Woolmen?

The Worshipful Company of Woolmen dates back over 850 years and is deeply rooted in the historic wool trade that helped shape the British economy. While times have changed, their purpose has evolved rather than disappeared. Today, the Woolmen support innovation in wool, promote the use of natural fibres like British wool, and fund a wide range of educational and charitable initiatives within the textile industry.

What is the Court?

Being admitted to the Court is a great honour. It’s made up of senior members who help lead the Company, guiding its charitable work, industry engagement, and the preservation of wool’s proud legacy in Britain. As someone who runs a wool-focused business—Little Beau Sheep, based right here in Yorkshire—I’m passionate about giving back to the community that has supported me, while advocating for the value and versatility of wool in today’s world.

Why it Matters

This isn’t just a personal achievement—it’s a sign that small, independent wool businesses like mine can have a voice at the table and help shape the future of the wool industry. From felted soap and wool laundry balls to new product developments using 100% British wool, I’ve always been committed to celebrating the natural beauty and eco-friendly power of wool.

Joining the Court means I can now play a part in influencing the wider conversation, helping to keep wool at the forefront of sustainable living and innovative British manufacturing.

A Woolly Thank You

I owe so much to that first award, which shone a light on what I was doing with British wool and helped me connect with a network of experts, innovators, and supporters who truly care about the future of natural fibres. It’s a full-circle moment—and one I’m immensely proud of.
