Wool Fact or Fiction? Does wool really need washing after every wear?
Verdict: Fiction! Not every time.
We’re so used to putting clothes straight into the laundry basket after wearing them that it can feel slightly strange to do anything else. But when it comes to wool, washing isn’t always necessary.
And that’s rather important when you’ve committed to wearing the same wool dress for 90 consecutive days!
Why does wool stay fresher for longer?
Wool has some remarkable natural properties.
Unlike many synthetic fibres, wool can absorb significant amounts of moisture vapour and interact with odour molecules. This helps manage the conditions that contribute to unpleasant smells and can keep wool garments fresher between washes.
That doesn’t mean wool never gets dirty. It simply means it doesn’t always need washing after a single wear.
The forgotten art of airing and brushing
Before wa
shing machines became an everyday convenience, caring for clothes often involved brushing, airing and treating small marks rather than washing the entire garment.
These are still useful habits today. Woolmark recommends gently brushing woven wool garments with a soft garment brush to remove surface dust and dirt. Airing wool can also help disperse everyday odours and allow moisture to escape.
There’s even a useful distinction between woven and knitted wool. A tailored wool dress or coat can be hung on a suitable hanger, while knitwear is generally better laid flat so it doesn’t stretch.
Woolmark also recommends resting wool garments for around 24 hours between wears to allow the fibres to recover their shape.
What about my 90-Day Wool Habit?
My dress is ge
tting considerably less time off than most wool garments! But every evening, it’s taken off, aired and given a chance to recover before the next day’s wear. I’ll be documenting when it genuinely needs washing rather than automatically washing it because I’ve worn it.
Of course, if something is visibly dirty, smells unpleasant or has absorbed perspiration, it needs appropriate cleaning, but we are on day 8 now and so far so good…
The takeaway – Wear it more. Air it regularly. Brush it gently. Wash it when needed.
Sometimes looking after our clothes better means doing a little less laundry.
